Anne Kirker on the life of an extraordinary local woman

In 1907, Laura Annie Willson became the first suffragette to be imprisoned in a Yorkshire prison. She was sentenced in Todmorden Magistrate’s Court in Todmorden Town Hall. 10 years later, Laura was awarded an MBE for her war work. She was a founder member of the Women’s Engineering Society and the first woman to be elected to the National Federation of Housebuilders.

Anne Kirker is a guide with Calderdale Heritage Walks, the Piece Hall Heritage Tours, and a volunteer at Calderdale Industrial Museum.
