Writing Wild Places

Nature writers Amy Liptrot and Neil Ansell discuss their experiences of remote and wild places with author and journalist Andrew Bibby.

Journalist and author Amy Liptrot’s debut memoir The Outrun was published by Canongate in 2016. It was a Sunday Times Bestseller, won the 2016 Wainwright Prize and PEN Ackerley Prize 2017, and was shortlisted for the Wellcome Book Prize, the Ondaatje Prize, and the Saltire Non Fiction Book of the Year.  Amy Liptrot has written a regular column for Caught by the River, out of which The Outrun emerged.

As a young man, Neil Ansell spent years hitchhiking around the world. Back home, he has worked with homeless people and experienced homelessness himself, before working for BBC television, specialising in investigative journalism. He is now the author of three nature and travel memoirs detailing experiences such as spending five years alone in a remote cottage in the hills of Mid Wales. His most recent book, The Last Wilderness was shortlisted for the Wainwright Prize and the Highland Book Prize.

Andrew Bibby has written widely on the landscape and the outdoors. He is the author of Back Roads Through Middle England: From Dorset to the Humber along the Jurassic stone belt, which focuses on the Jurassic limestone landscapes of southern and central England, and The Backbone of England: Landscape and Life on the Pennine Watershed, based on a journey made by Andrew on foot along the Pennine watershed that explores the different ways humans interact with the high Pennine moorlands.
